The History of Home Delivery Beer
As we’ve said in other places on the site, the mail order beer club business model has been around for quite a long time. There have been book of the month clubs and CD of the month clubs for years now and the beer of the month club is really nothing different. In fact, some of the first “mail order” businesses started in the mid to late 1800s.Today, we see companies like Netflix operating with much of the same business concept, except they add in a greater degree of choice. Rather than getting a set list of books or CDs delivered to your house, you can choose what you want delivered to your house.
Beer of the month clubs first came on the scene around the 1950s in America, but the selections were extremely small and the distributions channels weren’t at all what they are today because there were very few craft breweries around the country at this time. This is in large part due to the fact that the Microbrew scene did not come about until the 1970s and 1980s, so craft brews were just not something you saw in America in the 1950s.
There were also many legal hurdles to shipping alcohol across state lines. Some states have only recently lifted these restrictions, allowing home brew deliveries to being to flourish.
This flourishing really began to take effect in the 1990s in America. By that time, the Microbrew was well in effect in England and had made its way to America, with craft breweries popping up in almost every state.
Today there are countless beer clubs that you can below to for your monthly craft brew fix, and, thankfully, there are more starting every day. Part of the reason we started this site was to help people navigate through the many beer clubs that are now starting and assist you in picking one that is going to be here to stay.
